Banana Slugs

After every rain I am especially careful to watch my step now. The extra moisture brings out the Banana slugs in droves.
As I walked outside my door one morning after a rain storm, I saw one meandering across the redwood stump that is my deck. I said hello, knowing it would still be there when I came back. Speed is not their way.
They stand out as bright spots of color all over the lawn, amid the grays, browns, and dark greens of a cloudy autumn day.
Calm, passive creatures, I have come to think of them as friendly neighbors who visit often.

Each area of the world is so unique, some places in big ways, from desert to tropical rainforest. But other places are unique in smaller ways, like the quiet presence of Banana slugs.
